LSIT Global Institute
  • Founding Committee
Director of Development, San Diego Supercomputer Center

As program director for development and communications, Bart McDermott is responsible for all partnership building and external communication functions for the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego.

A veteran business development executive, McDermott’s team is responsible for building and maintaining SDSC’s Science and Technology Outreach program. Designed to secure collaborations with key industry players on research projects that have similar missions, participating partners receive access to leading-edge technology and techniques for a fraction of the cost normally associated with supercomputing engineering. McDermott also leads the team that develops and implements strategic external communications and marketing programs designed to build the image of SDSC locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

McDermott joined SDSC in 2001 from NetSuite in San Mateo, Calif., where he served as director of business development. There, he was responsible for developing and overseeing strategic partnerships with a number of cooperative companies and agencies. He also developed an incentive-based marketing program that rewarded customer references that resulted in new business.

Prior to his tenure at NetSuite, McDermott served in a similar capacity at a number of technology companies throughout the Bay Area. As manager of business development at Freeworks, Inc. in Mountain View, Calif., McDermott successfully implemented a partnership and marketing plan that resulted in 50,000 new users of the Freeworks productivity suite in the first six months after launch. He also served as a business development and technology licensing specialist for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and manager of environmental assessment and regulatory affairs for ENSR Consulting and Engineering.

From 1982 to 1991, McDermott worked as an attorney with private practice firms in Philadelphia. In this role, he specialized in business insurance litigation for environmental, medical malpractice and personal injury actions.

McDermott earned his bachelor of science from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., his masters of business and administration from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. and his juris doctorate from Delaware Law School in Wilmington, Del. He currently resides in San Diego.

The mission of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is to innovate, develop, and deploy technology to advance science. SDSC is involved in an extensive set of collaborations and activities at the intersection of technology and science whose purpose is to enable and facilitate the next generation of scientific advances. Founded in 1985 and primarily funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), SDSC is an organized research unit of the University of California, San Diego. With a staff of more than 400 scientists, software developers, and support personnel, SDSC is an international leader in data management, grid computing, biosciences, geosciences, and visualization.
