David C. Spellmeyer, Ph.D.

LSIT Global Institute
  • Technology Advisory Board
CTO & CIO, Nodality, Inc.

David has worked at the interface of information systems, computational sciences, chemistry and biology for his entire career. He is currently the CTO and CIO at Nodality, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company focused on patient-specific classification of disease.

Prior to joining Nodality in September of 2006, David served as a Research Staff Member in the IBM Almaden Services Research group, where he investigated how services, particularly information services, are created and delivered efficiently. In addition, David investigated novel business models for the use and exchange of health Information as part of IBM Research's Healthcare and Life Sciences effort.

David served as CSO and VP of Drug Discovery at Signature BioScience. Signature's drug discovery technologies combined the use of tumor-derived, primary human cells with information-based computational approaches. Prior to Signature, David held positions as Executive Director at DuPont Pharmaceuticals, as VP at CombiChem, and as Associate Director at Chiron. In each of these roles, David championed the need for tight integration of information and experimental sciences.

David received his BS in Computer Science and Chemistry in 1983 from Purdue University and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Organic Chemistry in 1987 from UCLA. He completed his post-doctoral work in molecular simulations and informatics in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF. David continues his interaction with the UCSF research groups through his adjunct associate professorship and as a guest lecturer at the UCSF Center for Bioentrepreneurship.

David has served as Chair, Councilor, and Public Relations Chair on the Executive Committee of the Computers in Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. He served as the launch Editor for the Annual Reports in Computational Chemistry. David has authored more than 35 scientific publications and two modeling packages, and frequently makes presentations at scientific seminars.

Nodality, Inc. is a leader in the discovery and development of next-generation personal diagnostics targeting cell-signaling pathway "nodes" detected in well-defined cellular sub-populations from individual patients. Nodality's powerful new approaches reveal the role of crucial nodes in the pathways of phospho-protein driven intracellular signaling networks. These diagnostic methods can be used for prognostic purposes i.e., for tracking disease progression, patient monitoring, and prediction of individual patient response to FDA-approved drugs and drug candidates in development
