Gerry Martin concluded a career of 30 years at Abbott Laboratories where he was Vice President, Corporate Licensing and Technology Alliances. He and his team were responsible for planning and executing multi-divisional business strategies, including in/out licensing and alliances on a global basis for the various divisions of Abbott.
He began his career in 1970 in sales leading to specialty sales director headquartered in divisional headquarter offices in Columbus Ohio.
In 1980, he was asked to serve as director of Abbott's operations in the Soviet Union. In this capacity, he was responsible for all managing all Abbott's initiatives in opening up the Soviet Union market.
In 1985, was made Director, Strategic Planning in Chicago where he lead various teams to develop strategic plans to create new market opportunities for Abbott.
In 1986, he was promoted to Vice President, Corporate Marketing, a newly established division of Abbott Laboratories focused on the hospital market, major buying groups and managed care.
In 1995, Gerry was promoted to Vice President, Corporate Licensing and Technology Alliances.
In 2000, Gerry retired from Abbott Laboratories and moved to San Diego. Shortly thereafter he joined the board of a small private biotech company headquartered in Rhode Island. He was then asked to serve as Board Chairman and eventually to step in as interim CEO to affect a turnaround of the company. After achieving the refocusing and turn-around the Board was seeking, Gerry once again 'retired' to San Diego, where he consults with various organizations in the life science field.
Gerry majored in psychology, history, and sociology at the University of Connecticut, and served in the U.S. Army reserve for 6 years. He is a member of various professional organizations including the Licensing Executive Society, CONNECT Advisory Board, MENSA.
