Digirad has been in business since 1985 designing, developing and manufacturing solid-state radiation detectors. Initially the company was focused on developing radiation detectors for defense, space, and commercial applications. Examples included hand held radiation detectors for examining the number and location of nuclear warheads in missiles and radiation detectors for deep space astronomy. In 1994, the company changed its direction and has focused on designing, developing, and manufacturing solid-state gamma cameras for nuclear medicine since that time.
Our proprietary, solid-state imaging technology is based on a novel, patented, semiconductor detector technology. Throughout the twentieth century, many products, including radios, computers and televisions replaced vacuum tube technology with solid-state technology, which led to dramatic improvements in energy efficiency, size, reliability, user friendliness, and cost effectiveness. We intend to revolutionize nuclear medicine the same way in which solid-state technology has revolutionized these other industries.
